The Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course will bristle with two tournaments this weekend.
Mark Scheibach of Bermuda Dunes, Calif., dropped a one-hole playoff with D. Matthew Pakkala of Honolulu for the First Alternate of the U.S. Open Qualifier, Wednesday at the Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club.
He’ll be among the field of the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links Sectional Qualifier which will tee off starting at 7 a.m., Saturday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Club.
Participants in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Qualifier will tee off starting at 8 a.m.
Mary Bea Porter King, president of the Hawai‘i Junior Golf Association, said spectators are welcomed to the event with no admission, but must walk the course.
The APL and WAPL are two of the 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, also hosting the U.S. Open Qualifier, Wednesday.
Sunday morning, the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course wakes up to the U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier with the first group teeing off at 7 a.m.
Spectators are also welcomed to enjoy the golf competition at no admission charge.
The 36-hole Sectional Qualifying tournament is one of 20 qualifiers being held around the United States over the course of the next few weeks. Top players from each Sectional Qualifier will advance to the U.S. Women’s Open Championship, which will be played July 7 through 10 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Col.
Kelli Oride, graduating from Kaua‘i High School as its top female golfer and finishing No. 6 during the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships, will be paired with Ciera Min of Hilo in a 7 a.m. tee time, Sunday. Her second round is scheduled for noon.
Taylor Viquelia and Daezsa Tomas, Oride’s Kaua‘i High School teammates, are scheduled to participate in the Saturday WAPL.
Carol Pratt, Cindy Oda, Sharron Weber, Naea Oda are other Kaua‘i players in the WAPL.
Joining Scheibach in the APL, are Bronzen Winters, a former Kaua‘i Junior Golfer now playing with the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, Kaua‘i’s T.J. Kua, a member of the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa squad, and Kaua‘i Junior Golfer Keegan Loo.
They will be joined by Ben Ellsworth, Reyn Morioka, Mike Garcia, Jaben Schalk, Kenji Miyata, Juston Thomas, Clesson Pang, Pono Tokioka, P.J. Medeiros, Levi Miyashiro, Kekoa Morgan, Mark Morioka, Jonathan Ota and Cory Oride.
