WAILUA — John Lydgate and the Friends of Kamalani are inviting anyone who is interested to come help with a beach clean-up Saturday morning at Morgan’s Ponds. The effort is planned to start at 8:30 a.m. in Lydgate Park.
Norm Hunter, a county lifeguard, said the contractors doing the dredging are almost finished. He said they plan to help Lydgate get the popular Eastside swimming area ready to re-open Memorial Day.
“The contractors are working on hauling off the debris and sand and will work on cleaning up Saturday,” Hunter said Monday during a gathering at the Mo‘ikeha Building to commemorate Ocean and Beach Safety Week.
Lydgate has titled Saturday’s effort as the “Mother of all Beach Clean-Ups.”
“Who knows — no promises — but once cleaned, the pond may be restocked with a couple of mermaids?” Lydgate said in an email. “But we promise, no watersnakes or pirates!”
Goodfellow Brothers was awarded a $274,450 contract for the Lydgate Pond restoration project which includes sand and debris removal, dredging the large pond to a depth of seven to nine feet and placing the boulders which fell into the pond back in their original positions along the border, according to a county release.
Morgan’s Ponds were built in 1964 to provide residents and visitors with a year-round protected area for swimming.
