Hayley Uliana, a 2011 graduate of Island School, was named the recipient of the $1,500 Gertrude Ekvall Smith Memorial Scholarship at the Kalaheo Missionary Church Baccalaureate Service on May 15. She is the daughter of Joe and Renee Uliana of Hanapepe.
This award is presented annually to a graduating high school senior who is bound for a Christian college and who is an active member of a Missionary Church.
The selection was based on character, Christian service, academics and financial need. Uliana attends Kalaheo Missionary Church.
“Over the years Miss Uliana has always been a blessing to our youth group, selflessly working and serving others without complaint,” states RuthAnn Silva, Uliana’s youth director. “She has also been an admirable leader in our Church’s children’s ministry as well as our youth program. She has a wonderful rapport with kids and is well suited for her goal to be an elementary school teacher.”
Uliana plans to attend Azusa Pacific University, a Christian college in California. Her goal is to eventually combine a teaching career with mission work.
Gertrude Ekvall Smith was an active member of the Koloa Missionary Church and an avid believer in the importance of education.
After her death, her son, Ray Smith, set up the scholarship in her name as a memorial.
