LIHU‘E — Used book sales starting as early as today will help boost the Hawai‘i State Public Library System Summer Reading Programs, said Carolyn Larson, Thursday.
Larson, the librarian at the Lihu‘e Public Library, said the Friends of the Lihu‘e Public Library will be hosting its Spring Used Book Sale starting today and running through Sunday afternoon.
The Friends of the Princeville Library will be hosting its used book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and is open to the public with values starting at $1 for most hard cover books and 50 cents for paperbacks.
“If a child accompanies an adult to the sale, the child gets a free book,” said Jean Flaherty of the Princeville Library, which has Steve Sobel coordinating the sale.
That offer bolsters the Toddler and Children portions of the HSPLS Summer Reading program, which has a theme of “One World, Many Stories.”
Teen division, which is grade 7 through 2011 high school graduates, has a theme of “You are Here,” encouraging young people to explore different places and genres.
The adult division, ages 18 and older, have “Novel Destinations” featuring books which encourage adults to explore exotic locales and countries.
Readers of all ages are invited to participate in the program, which started May 31 and will run through July 1 at no cost, states a release from Paul Mark of the state library system.
Participants who visit the library weekly and read at least one book per week are eligible to receive a free weekly reading incentive while supplies last, the release states.
“This is a good program because the books can be bought, borrowed, or even downloaded from the state library’s e-book collections,” Larson said.
She said each island will have an overall winning incentive and each of the branches will have an overall winning prize as well.
The used book sale at the Lihu‘e Public Library will be held in the conference room from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. today and Saturday. Sunday hours are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“We have a lot of high quality items we found during the recent big cleaning,” she said. “These include book ends to tape recorders and they’re of good quality.”
She said another new feature for the used book store is the implementation of a surprise prize which comes with the purchase of a designated book.
“This can come at any time,” said Rick Collins, treasurer of the Friends of the Lihu‘e Public Library and coordinator of the used book sale. “There are some special titles, which when selected, will have a surprise prize which comes with it.”
A selection of DVDs and CDs are also available at both sales, Larson noting that the Lihu‘e Library also has a good number of videotapes as more and more people are converting to digital media.
Collins said there are also a good selection of foreign language books which came out of the cleaning of that section.
“At first, I was concerned about how the closing of Borders Books and Music would affect the amount of titles coming in,” Collins said. “But we’ve gotten a good amount of contributions from different organizations so we’re at about the same levels as previous sales. There is a good selection to choose from and as usual, deep discounts is the order of the day. We don’t want anything left after Sunday.”
