LIHU‘E — Tennis players get those rackets ready! The Lihu‘e County Park tennis courts have reopened and are ready for play.
On Monday, county officials announced the courts’ reopening following a more than two-month closure for a lighting retrofit, repair of the courts’ surfaces and installation of an ADA compliant parking stall, access aisle and ramp, a county press release said.
During the closure, some of the regular users of the facility seized the opportunity to re-paint the dugouts and backboards.
“The Lihu‘e tennis courts haven’t looked this good since its last major renovation in 1994,” said Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo.
“I want to thank everyone who partnered with us on this project from the tennis community to the Department of Public Works, as well as the contractor.”
Paul’s Electrical Contracting, LLC was awarded a $1.1 million contract to retrofit all of the lights at five county facilities including: Hanapepe Stadium; Isenberg Park; the Lihu’e County Park tennis courts; Peter Rayno Park; and Vidinha Stadium.
The tennis courts was the last of the five facilities to be retrofitted.
Rapozo pointed out that while the lighting retrofit at the Lihu’e tennis courts was intended to minimize impacts on endangered and threatened seabirds, the latest technology in lighting software will be a boon for tennis players, as well.
“A new electronic timer was installed that allows users to access the lights with the push of a button anytime between 5 and 10 p.m.,” Rapozo said.
The computerized system also enables the county to track usage and ensures that the lights will not be turned on during the shearwater fledging season from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15, the press release said.
The Department of Public Works Building Division installed the ADA compliant parking spot, access aisle and ramp.
