It’s a new day, and to some a new adventure awaits. One of my friends was getting ready to leave the island and move back to the Mainland. A group of us ladies had to send her off the right way. The other ladies in our group wanted to treat her to a going-away luncheon, so we took her to Duke’s Barefoot Bar, which is below the main restaurant near the Marriott walking strip. It was a gloomy day; the skies were literally gray and, well, it was bittersweet for all of us. But toward the end of the lunch ge-together, it felt like a home run.
When we got there, we waited to be seated. It only took the host about 20 minutes to seat us. The waitress came with the menus and her great personality. As we browsed through the menu, you saw pupus, salads, and burgers. Most of us ladies were watching our figure, so we leaned towards the appetizer and salad section. The guest of honor and my other friend ordered the “Grilled chicken quesadilla,” that came with Jack and Cheddar cheese, guacamole and fresh chunky salsa. The other friend in our group ordered the “Coconut Shrimp,” that came with the spicy lilikoi dipping sauce, yum!
What did I order; well of course I had the craving for some greens. So I played it safe and ordered the “Caesar Salad,” with grilled chicken and a side order of avocados. Did I feel like I made the right move? Well as soon as I took a bite, I knew I stayed true my taste buds. I also loved their amazing drink specials for happy hour, and virgin drinks like their “Lava flows.” But don’t take it from me, find your way to the Marriot and take a walk near the beach barefooted to find this place.
As we ladies, made conversation, caught up on life, past memories and took in new ones we felt really relaxed at Duke’s and maybe because the staff was so prompt and carefree. They were always smiling and laughing with us. We sure felt like we were in or element, no negativity just the waves converting into music for our ears to enjoy. If you have kids with you, the staffs always are prepared with crayons and coloring paper. What a thoughtful restaurant!
As a regular Duke’s customer, I always look forward to the ending of the main dish. That’s when the waitress pitches you the idea of hitting a home run with their famous “Hula pie!” A “Hula pie,” has a crust made of Oreo cookies smothered in chocolate syrup, and vanilla ice-cream that is topped off with cool whip and fresh macadamia nuts. Points all around the board after that Hula pie, now we knew our friend was going to miss Kaua’i a little. Of course she was an Oreo cookie fan, so it definitely made her smile.
