KAPA‘A — Lexton Camat’s two free throws in the second overtime provided the push to give Hanakila its 37-34 edge over Westside Basketball, Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Camat finished with nine, which was not the highest point total for Hanakila as Triston Hawelu-Inanod scored 14 in the win, one coming on a free throw in the second overtime.
Briggs Agu scored a game-high 21 points for Westside Basketball.
Coach John Kaneholani was pressed into service Tuesday when Hanakila’s Girls Under 12 team took the court at the Bernice Hundley Gym against Kaulupono-White as the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association and the County of Kaua‘i hosted five games, two in Kalaheo and three in Kapa‘a in the Youth Summer Basketball league.
But Kaneholani and the Hanakila wahine, despite enthusiastic and vocal support from its large fan base, was not as successful as the boys in Kalaheo, the Hanakila ladies coming up with just six points, four from Jaliyah Casem against Kaulupono-Blue, which finished with 42 points led by Breeann Cayaban’s 10.
Thomas Yam finished with a blistering 22 points and Chysen Barretto added 10 points to lead the Kaua‘i Ballers Boys Under 12 to a 57-13 win over Team Lihu‘e in the second game played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Jhay Karl Dante led the Team Lihu‘e Boys Under 12 effort with eight points.
The roles were reversed in Kapa‘a where the Team Lihu‘e Girls Under 12 rebounded from a stinging loss Monday night to post a 19-11 win over the Kaua‘i Ballers, Ashley Lucas posting 12 points to lead the Team Lihu‘e girls.
Alexis Warnock, whose sister Autumn was part of the Monday night Kaua‘i Ballers’ win, topped the Kaua‘i Ballers with four points, the effort getting great defensive efforts from Kunani Tuttle and sisters Tori and Tamare Daligcon-Pomaikai.
The Kamikaze, also on the losing end Monday night, came back and held Kaulupono-White to just seven points in its 28-7 redemption at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Siokapesi Paua and Sheryl Ann Tomas led the victory with eight and seven points, respectively.
Teagan Keep, the strong low post for Kaulupono-White finished with five of the team’s seven points.
The KYBA and County of Kaua‘i Youth Summer Basketball league resumes play Monday, after two basketball tournaments at the Island School gym and at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Team Central is hosting the 2011 Merv Lopes Classic, which opened play Wednesday and continues through Saturday at Island School.
Kaila Harris of the Team Lihu‘e Girls Under 12 squad said they will be participating in a tournament which starts today at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center and runs through Saturday.
On Monday, Team Lihu‘e will face off against Kaulupono in a 6 p.m. tipoff at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, followed by the Kaua‘i Ballers tangling with the Kamikaze at 7 p.m. in a pair of Girls 14 Under games.
