‘OMA‘O — Fifteen truckloads of concrete, or about 120 cubic yards, were used to pour the roof of the Piwai 500,000-gallon water storage tank, Tuesday morning.
Unlimited Builders, contractor for the $2.15-million project, will use almost 700 cubic yards to complete the reinforced concrete storage tank for the county’s Department of Water.
The new tank sits adjacent to a 2-year-old, 100,000-gallon concrete tank in the mountains of ‘Oma‘o and should be online in November with its water source coming from existing groundwater wells in the area.
This project is part of the DOW’s 2020 Plan, providing increased storage to supply the needs of growing Kaua‘i South Shore communities, states a DOW release.
Dustin Moises, supervising the work for the DOW, said on Tuesday that the new tank will provide increased storage to take care of the ‘Oma‘o-Lawa‘i areas of service.
Kukui‘ula Development Co., currently creating its South Shore community, worked on providing its own water infrastructure system.
Moises said that in simple terms what it means is the landowner in the ‘Oma‘o-Lawai area can have water for their Additional Dwelling Units.
The Kaua‘i DOW operates and manages nine separate water systems on the island under the comprehensive guidance of the Water Plan 2020, a long-range planning document developed with extensive community input, which provides a road map for upgrading aging infrastructure and meeting the needs of growth.
In its system, the DOW operates and maintains 51 wells, 60 tanks, two tunnels, 19 booster pump stations and 75 control valve stations, as well as more than 400 miles of pipeline to approximately 20,000 customers.
The DOW staff of 75 people performs all functions necessary to collect, treat and distribute potable water from the source to the tap as well as most support functions including accounting, customer service, engineering, planning and procurement.
