A late-race miscue by Fast Company was costly, Thursday at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Junior Series, Race No. 2.
Fast Company, one of three regular Olson 30s in the harbor series races, had the lead for most of the race, according to Sharon Gibson of the NYC Race Committee.
But on the final lap, at the red can at the cliff, Fast Company turned the can on the wrong side, Gibson said.
Realizing the miscue, Fast Company immediately worked to correct the error, which required retracing her path to the start of the bad move, but that break allowed OZone, another Olson 30, to take the lead and the race.
OZone finished the 6.23-mile course in 15-20 knot winds on an elapsed sail of 1:06:42 and corrected to 1:06:48 PHRF for the win.
Fast Company was on her tail with a 1:07:47 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:07:53 PHRF, followed by Papa‘au, an Express 27 coming in third after correcting to 1:08:53 PHRF.
On the water, Speedy, the third Olson 30, crossed ahead of Papa‘au on a 1:10:29 elapsed sail to Papa‘au’s 1:11:57, but the PHRF correction put Speedy in fourth at 1:10:36.
Bonjolea (1:17:11 elapsed, 1:14:13 PHRF) corrected to 1:04:29 Club for top honors in that division followed by Coyote, a C&C 38, rounding out the fleet with a 1:22:13 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:17:00 PHRF.
The NYC Junior Series continues Thursday with its third race and the NYC Race Committee invites the public to view the competition at no charge from the vantage point of the jetty wall.
First flags fly at 5 p.m.
