KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a Warrior football team put aside its pads and practice to prepare 1,500 whole chicken, Saturday.
Brandon Fujita of the Warrior coaching staff said the 100-plus boys on the junior varsity and varsity teams were broken down into shifts, working four hours at a time to accomplish the task at the Kapa‘a Hongwanji Mission.
“The church’s setup for doing the chicken is amazing,” said Fred Levinthol, another coach. “If I had six feet of this at my house, who knows what I could do. This set up allowed us to crank out more than 190 chicken at a time.”
Fujita said the fundraising effort is to help the Kapa‘a football team get to O‘ahu where it will participate in the pre-season Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium.
Levinthol said they brought in three truckloads of chicken for the event which had the football boys selling pre-sale tickets along with several select community outlets.
“There was about 500 chicken on each load and the boys unloaded everything at the church,” Levinthol said. “We came in at 1:30 a.m. (Saturday) and by 2 a.m. the fires were lit and the work started.”
He said the boys were divided into special stations, each station responsible for one segment of the preparation to prevent handlers of uncooked fowl to mix with handlers of cooked chicken.
The first shift consisted of seniors followed by the juniors, sophomores and freshmen doing the clean up.
“We were pretty good,” Fujita said. “…we’re just waiting for customers to pick up.”
