The Hawai‘i Ocean Film Festival returns this year with three nights of films about marine resources, ocean recreation, and cultural connections to the sea. It will be held outdoors, under the stars and on the big screen, Friday through Sunday, a news release states.
Opening night is Friday at Waipa featuring the winning films submitted from around the world, and a showcase of local filmmakers including Waimea High School’s Kevin Killermanns’ winning film from the Planet Connect contest, and the premier of Teri Tico’s “Miss South Pacific,” about climate change, rising sea levels and a beauty pageant, the release states.
The winning animations are “Look to the Sea,” by Cable Hardin for the Census for Marine life, and “Orchestra in Hot Air Balloon,” by Kazuni Kurimoto of Japan. This beautiful music video is about a fiddler’s cat that gets swept out to sea in the March tidal wave, but survives with the other animals he meets by clinging to a log, and gets rescued by the Orchestra in Hot Air Balloon, the release states.
Surf films include Oxbow’s Walls of Perception and a teaser from Emi Cataldi’s “Mayumba Equator Flavored Pointbreaks on the Edge of Africa,” with the entire film playing on Sunday night.
Two Surfrider Films will be featured at this year’s event. The short film about Net Patrol by Dr. Robert Zelkovsky highlights the efforts of the Kaua‘i Chapter of Surfrider, and the winning PSA “Where is Away,” by Kyle Thiermann of Surfingforchange.com features Stuart Coleman of Surfrider and a song by Jack Johnson. Folks who join Surfrider the night of the event get in free, the release states.
Saturday night is a free showing of the movie “Soul Surfer” sponsored in part by the Friends of Bethany Foundation. Also playing is “Ocean Monk” and the student films. This show is scheduled for Waioli town Park located at the Hanalei Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
Sunday night is back at Waipa with a tribute to Andy Irons on what would have been his 33rd birthday.
Shows begin at 7 p.m. Bring blankets and beach chairs. Tickets are available at the gate, Hanalei Surf Company or Princeville Music Kiosk at Foodland.
