Erin Doi threw a two-hitter and struck out three Nevada batters to lead the Kawaihau Big League All-Stars to a 10-0 win, Monday in Bremerton, Wash.
“We had no errors today,” said Kirk Correa, head coach of the team representing Hawai‘i at the Western Regional Tournament. “Erin went the distance for the win and everybody in the batting order had at least one hit, so the boys are feeling pretty good right now.”
Leading the lumberyard, Travis Soares smacked a triple; Kalen Iwai, one of the Kapa‘a High School players, whacked a double; and Kaimana Perreira-Alquiza, the second baseman, Dallas Correa, the catcher, and Shylen Keuma, playing first base, all marked hits.
“That’s pretty much our lineup for today,” Kirk said, noting the game ended in the fifth inning on the mercy ruling. “Against Oregon, we need to win. But more than that, we cannot allow more than five runs.”
Kirk said if Nevada gets by Northern California, a 17-0 winner over Oregon on Monday in another five-inning affair, and Kawaihau allows more than five runs, the team may be bumped from the playoffs which start Thursday.
The Kawaihau Big League All-Stars take on Oregon starting at 7 a.m., HST, today.
“We got to watch a little of the Oregon game and it looks like they have some decent pitching,” Kirk said. “They look like Nevada, but we just need to win that one and not allow more than five runs.”
The game will be streamed live for free on www.livestream.com/emeraldcitysportstv.
“They were trying to get the feed for the Nevada game, but someone had an accident with one of the cables,” Kirk said. “We were getting a lot of phone calls. If they log on at about 6:30 a.m., there will probably be the interviews with the coaches and other pre-game material before the game starts at 7 a.m.”
Kirk said Northern California, the team which beat them 5-3, Saturday, is now 2-0 in pool play. Hawai‘i is 1-1, Oregon is 0-2 and Nevada is 1-1.
“The boys are unreal, now,” Kirk said. “They’re loud and doing chants and I think for the first time, they believe they can play baseball with some of the other teams, that Kaua‘i has some baseball players.”
He said they are so appreciative of all the support received from people back on the island, the coaches’ interview on livestream.com showing off the gifted Kawaihau shirt, boxes of Hawaiian Host macadamia nuts, packages of Kaua‘i Coffee and Kaua‘i Cookies and the “Kaua‘i Loves You” button which the announcer put on.
