LIHU‘E — Bryden Salvador fired a one-under par 71 to clinch first place in the Boys 13-14 Championship at the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association 2011 Summer Challenge, last week at the Puakea Golf Course.
Playing under cloudy skies and soft trades, Salvador carded the best round of the day and was followed three strokes back by Keegan Loo (74), Jamie Amimoto (79) and Kainalu Gandia (85), Gandia struggling through the back nine.
Niki Upson and Justice Chatfield finished tied at 117 in the 10 and Under “A” off Upson getting the nod for first place followed by Chatfield.
Christian Ganir ended topping the 10 and Under Championship, finishing with a 97 followed by Mason Gibson (103) and James Pratt a stroke back at 104.
Nathaniel Dama topped the 11-12 “A” group with a 129 followed by Samantha Nichols carding a 147.
Trevor Kua finished with a one-over par 73 to lock in the 11-12 Boys Championshipfollowed by Rilen Loo at 79. Reece Valencia (85) and Logan Gibson (90) rounded out the field.
Na‘ea Oda of Kapa‘a was the sole Girls 13-14 participant after Kawena Warren withdrew, ending the day with a 94 after being paired with players in the Girls 15-18 Championship.
Daezsa Tomas topped that flight with a 79 over Taylor Viquelia who ended with an 87.
Keith Jose finished three strokes ahead of Michael Miller to lock up the Boys 13-14 “A” , Jose carding a 93 to Michael’s 96. Jacob Dysinger rounded out the leaderboard at 115.
Daniel Miller finished a stroke ahead of Vance Tokita to take the Boys 15-18 “A”, Daniel carding a 103 to Tokita’s 104.
Reyn Morioka finished first in the Boys 15-18 Championship flight with a 78 followed two strokes back by Kenji Miyata who carded an 80. La‘akea Warren ended with an 86 for third place.
Next on the tournament schedule, the junior golfers take off, Sunday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course for its Back to School tournament. There will be no points for Level 3 players counting to the year-end standings and eligibility for the Atlanta/Kaua‘i Team Challenge in this tournament.
Registration is still open for the 3-Club Tournament which will be played at the Kukuiolono Golf Course on Aug. 20.
This tournament will be followed by the KJGA major fundraiser, the 99+1 Holes Tournament which will be played at the Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club on Aug. 21, rescheduled from the original Aug. 13 date.
This marathon golf event challenges a field of the island’s leading businessmen and women and other volunteers to complete 100 consecutive holes in a single day, raising a minimum amount of pledges as the entry fee.
