Heiva I Kaua‘i Tahitian dance competition celebrates 10 years when it returns Aug. 6 and 7 to Kapa‘a Beach Park.
The two-day festival features Pacific Island arts and crafts, a daily silent auction, local foods, hands-on Polynesian cultural craft demonstrations and live entertainment.
The award-winning group Te Vai Ura Nui from O‘ahu will perform Otea, Aparima and Ahuroa dances on both days.
Heiva I Kaua‘i is a non-profit International Tahitian dance and drumming competition, which includes more than 70 soloists of all ages and multiple group competitors from Hawai‘i and the mainland. Two Tahitian drumming and dance workshops will be held 5 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
On August 6, a traditional welcoming ceremony will start the festivities. Gates open to the public at 9 a.m., with solo competition beginning at 10 a.m.
Solo categories include traditional Otea vahine and tane, for junior, senior and master divisions. Group categories include Otea, Aparima, Ahuroa and Tahitian drumming. Group competition is scheduled to begin Saturday afternoon and will continue through Sunday. Schedules will be adjusted to accommodate the number of entries.
Sunday, the gates open at 9 a.m. and exhibition dancing begins at 10 a.m., and the day will end with solo, group and drumming award presentations.
Admission is $5 a day at the door. Children age 6 and under are free.
This event is ADA accessible. Persons in need of aid to participate need to call 822-9447 at least five days before the event.
