LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School bowling, the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions, set the pace for the fall season by sweeping the KIF opener, Thursday at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
After dominating the two opening games, the Kaua‘i boys tumbled to third place in the third game, but pulled off a win with a 2167 pinfall, just 69 pins ahead of Waimea (2098) and Kapa‘a (1963) boys.
The Red Raider wahine asserted itself in the opening game and never looked back, taking the three-game series with a 2060 pinfall over Kapa‘a (1810) and Waimea (1725).
With the wins, both the Kaua‘i boys and girls teams earn a point in the league standings.
Jorden De-Costa-Caalim, Aniase Soltren and Darcie Vea set the pace for the Red Raider girls in the opening frame, De-Costa-Caalim rolling a 172 followed by Soltren and Vea accumulating 171 and 169, respectively.
Vea finished by leading the Red Raiders, jumping to a 185 second game and closing with 149.
Second place went to Kapa‘a, rolling behind Angelika Questin (157-136-151), Reggie McCabe (151-133-142) and Junelle Cacal (123-127-115), who finished with two second places and a third place, the first game being separated by a mere 13 pins.
Waimea girls captured Game 3, 601-585 behind Lacie Montemayor’s 149 and Kimberly Hoeckmann-Percival’s 127, both girls rolling their best scores in the second place win.
Janelle Papa (129-148-121) had the night’s high for the Menehune at 148 in Game 2.
The boys’ matches were a lot closer, but the Kaua‘i boys set the pace with strong wins in the first two games.
Joseph Nebre (179-180-140), Ammon Ho‘opi‘i-Akau (157-149-127) and Kyle Balisacan (152-181-149) set the bar for the Kaua‘i boys.
Randy Iloreta Jr. had the high score for the boys, rolling a 201 in Game 3, but Kapa‘a falling short of Waimea and taking second place by just three pins, 659-656, over Kaua‘i.
Iloreta (182-188-201) was joined by Shannon Duarte (113-102-127) and Clarence Sembrano Jr. (108-150-113) as the Warrior leaders.
Kalei Nakaya rolled a 169 in Game 3 to lead Waimea to its top placement in that game. Nakaya (184-166-169) and Chase Ueno (170-159-148) set the pace for the Menehune, getting help from Micah Rapacon who came in with strong second and third games, 152 and 155, respectively.
The KIF bowling league continues Thursday with the first ball rolling at 5 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
There is no admission to view the competition and refreshments are available at the LBC Snack Bar.
