Jon Barretto of Hawai‘i Skin Diver fame added to his legacy on Aug. 27. While spearfishing just outside Black Mountain, he shot a 105-pound ulua while freediving in about 50 feet of water. After Barretto speared it, the fish retreated into a cave, where Barretto’s partners Ryan Paik and Tony Gasli had to help pull it out. This was Barretto’s first 100-pounder. Jason Matsumoto and boat captain/owner Tyler Tsuyama, abourd the ‘Lil Jo,’ also witnessed the feat. According to Hawai‘i Skin Diver’s website, the record for spearing an ulua is a 144.2-pounder caught by Travis Kashiwa off Kane‘ohe Bay in 2003.
