KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a Beach Park, home of a large soccer field and many community events, is receiving a facelift.
The administration this week started replacing a badly damaged fence at the beachfront park. The new fence replaces a sagging fence that had several holes in it.
“The project started on Monday and is expected to be completed in about a month,” according to county officials.
Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Ian Costa a few months ago told County Council members that he was surprised when he got an estimate to replace only two sides of the fencing. The price tag had come in at $175,000.
But the fencing being erected at the park will be much cheaper than that. County officials on Friday said that Wellington Fencing Co. will replace the entire fence, “not just two sides,” under a $83,950 contract.
Self-described “public safety coordinator” Jerome Freitas had been pressing the county for a while to replace the fencing.
He said that earlier this year county officials had told him that the administration was proposing in the budget for Fiscal Year 2012 to hire a contractor to repair or replace the 12-foot-high fence.
On June 22, the administration got back to Freitas, and told him that, “if all goes well,” the fence would be repaired or replaced by August.
