LIHU‘E — A Lihu‘e resident was struck by a car on Kuhio Highway Thursday afternoon, sustaining minor injuries.
At about 3 p.m. a 1990 maroon Cadillac driven by a 77-year-old Lihu‘e resident was making a right turn out of the Walmart parking lot when he struck a 77-year-old pedestrian who was walking in the crosswalk heading toward Fish Express, county spokeswoman Sarah Blane said.
Lihu‘e Fire Station firefighters and American Medical Response paramedics treated the pedestrian for a gash on his arm at the scene. The pedestrian was released at the scene.
The driver and the passenger from the Cadillac required no medical attention.
Traffic was diverted while police officers investigated the accident and the pedestrian was being treated.
Meanwhile, another accident near Lihu‘e caused police to temporarily close a lane on Kuhio Highway just north of the intersection with Kapule Highway.
At about 2:11 p.m., a 2011 silver Nissan driven by a visitor was headed northbound in the center lane of Kuhio Highway, when the driver merged into the right outer lane, Blane said.
“According to witnesses, the Nissan slowed down abruptly when entering the outer lane, causing the vehicle behind it, a 2002 white Honda, to also slow down,” Blane said. “As a result, the Honda was rear-ended by the car behind it, a 2010 white Chrysler, which caused it to rear-end the silver Nissan.”
Blane said the silver Nissan sustained moderate damage to its rear bumper and the white Honda sustained major front and rear-end damage, but no injuries were reported.
The outer northbound lane of Kuhio Highway was temporarily closed for investigation and vehicle removal.
