LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School and Waimea High School air riflery teams swept their respective matches, Thursday, Kaua‘i hosting the Kapa‘a Warriors and Waimea shooting at the Island School range in Puhi.
The Waimea boys pulled off an 1102-1041 edge over the Island School boys while the Menehune wahine piled up 1093 points to the 301 collected by the two Island School girls.
Kaua‘i High School boys piled up 1047 points to Kapa‘a’s 931, the Warrior boys putting together its first five-shooter team this season with the appearance of Adam Clark who ended the day in the No. 2 position with a 202.
Kaua‘i girls also held off Kapa‘a 1123 to Kapa‘a’s 931 points.
“The weather was awesome, finally,” said Island School coach Sean Magoun after last week’s match in Puhi was canceled due to afternoon rains. “There was a great deal of improvement on the part of the Voyager boys’ team as they were all hovering around the 200-point mark, but the Waimea boys were still the dominant force with high point honors going to Austin Kunishige at 240 points.”
Kunishige’s 240 (87-80-73) points was the top score of the day, Reyn Morioka of the Red Raiders finishing with a 237 (90-78-69) from the second relay, just a point shy of Waimea’s Jaron Parongao who ended at 238 (86-83-69), getting strong showings in the prone and kneeling positions where he chalked up 86 and 83 points, respectively.
Morioka’s strong position was in the prone where he notched 90 points, the day’s best showing in that position.
Waimea’s scoring shooters included Kunishige, Parongao, John Medeiros (86-79-66-231), Kris Toma (83-77-53-213) and John Gawaran (69-74-37-180).
Island School boys were led by Marcus Punua (88-83-60-231), Chad Andrade (84-68-60-212), Cole Moore (85-72-50-207), Daniel Miller (79-71-47-197) and Michah Kimi (82-72-40-194).
Kayla Ishida took the lead for the Waimea girls, posting a 225 (88-80-57), just a point ahead of Jackie Taylor’s 224 (87-69-68). Rachel Umetsu followed at 217 (82-77-58) with Nikki Acoba, a usual second relay shooter, posting a 215 (84-80-51) and Lia Shigematsu (89-68-55-212) rounding out the team scoring.
Franny Kimi (69-38-49-156) and Allison Culliney (75-47-23-145) posted scores for Island School.
Kaua‘i’s Kristyn Yamamotoya posted a 249 (87-83-79), the best score for the girls on the day, to lead the Red Raider ladies to the best girls’ team showing on the day. Her strong showing was followed by Delissa Nobriga, shooting in the second relay to finish at 229 (74-80-75), Sara Koide (83-80-56-219), Britney Fernandes (86-76-57-219) and Marissa Chun (84-71-52-207).
Kaylyn Armstrong (73-70-61-204) and Kichelle Momohara (83-77-44-204) set the pace for the Kapa‘a girls. They were followed by Mary Walker (83-56-61-200), Shyanne Almarza (67-68-57-192) and Marissa Goo (75-72-44-191).
Following Morioka’s lead, Kaua‘i boys saw Hikari Oberman (72-72-64-208), Colby Ihara-Takase (86-67-54-207), Brandon Chun (80-71-48-199) and Matthew Kawamura (83-60-53-196) contributed to the win.
Kapa‘a’s boys’ scores were led by Kalani Murakami (82-72-54-208), Clark (75-80-47-202), Justin Apilado (67-68-62-197), Justin Pasadava (60-67-50-177) and Emmanuel Tangonan (74-48-25-147).
The Wednesday match promises to be very interesting when Waimea visits the Kaua‘i High School range and Island School travels to the Kapa‘a High School range.
