HANAPEPE — The Kapa‘a Eagles swept all three of its matches this weekend in games hosted by the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League, Friday night and Sunday at Hanapepe Stadium.
The Eagles Mitey Mites captured the Kekaha Titans 20-7, Friday night, and on Sunday, the Junior Pee Wee Eagles blanked the Titans 31-0 and the Junior Midget Eagles got past the Titans, 25-10.
The Lihu‘e Patriots, playing against the Koloa Redskins, finished with two wins and a tie, the Redskins answering the Patriots in the opening quarter, Friday to end in a 6-6 stalemate.
Sunday, the JPW Patriots broke open for three third quarter TDs en route to a 24-0 shutout over the Redskins, and in the Jr. Midget outing, the Patriots shut down Koloa, 28-0 in a game which was shorted due to a player injury in the final quarter.
The Kapa‘a Eagles draw the bye this weekend when the Mitey Mite Kekaha Titans open against the Lihu‘e Patriots starting at 8 a.m. at Hanapepe Stadium followed by the Mitey Mite Hanapepe Colts kicking off against the Koloa Redskins at 10 a.m.
Sunday matches will start from 8:30 a.m. at Hanapepe Stadium when the Junior Midget Kekaha Titans open against the Lihu‘e Patriots followed by the JPW Titans and Patriots at 10:30 a.m.
The afternoon series will have the Junior Midget Colts kicking off against the Koloa Redskins at 12:30 p.m. followed by the JPW Colts and Redskins meeting at 2:30 p.m.
During the Friday nightcap, the final night game of this year, Kahanu Davis opened the scorebooks on a 22-yard scoring run to put the Mitey Mite Patriots up 6-0 after the point-after failed.
But Koloa lost little time answering, Malu Ralston finding the end zone on a 16-yard scoring run to knot the game at 6-6 after the Redskins’ PAT failed.
The Friday nightcap saw the Mitey Mite Titans open on a 15-yard run by Bryson Kapahu, that score being graced by Jensen Battulayan for the 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Mitey Mite Eagles answered when Keawe Cabebe plunged to the end zone on a 7-yard charge, the point after failing to keep Kekaha in the driver’s seat, 7-6 until the third frame.
Kahale Kaleiohi bulled two yards for the score which was graced when Sam Odell completed the PAT for the 13-7 go-ahead.
Cabebe iced the victory in the fourth period with a 2-yard scoring lunge, Odell again adding the PAT for the 20-7 final.
Jai Alapai and Levi Cummings had scoring runs of 37 yards and 19 yards, respectively, to give the JPW Eagles a 13-0 lead at the half following Dusten Ramsayer-Burdette completing the PAT following Alapai’s opening score in the Sunday afternoon series.
The JPW Eagles added three more TDs in the second half, a 43-yard Keona Nakamura-Makanai run and a 9-yard run by Jhance White-Cummings in the third period and a 28-yard romp by Austin Smith in the final period for the 31-0 final.
Junior Midget Kekaha quarterback Kekai San Agustin-Nordmeier threw a 16-yard pass to Cody Taniguchi in the third period to erase a 6-2 halftime deficit, Taniguchi pushing the PAT for the 10-6 go-ahead.
But Kapa‘a answered with three touchdowns, including two by Braxton Garcia to regain the lead and lock the win on a 29-yard scoring run, his second, in the final period. Garcia’s first score was a four-yard score followed by Jayden Palenapa-Likelio finding the end zone on a three-yard run to open the fourth period.
Christian Manera peeled off 40 yards and a score to give the JPW Patriots a 6-0 lead at the half, in the Sunday morning opener against Koloa.
The JPW Patriots came out of the locker rooms and added three more TDs in the third period, a 9-yard run by Jasper Jacinto, a 33-yard breakout by Keanu Camalliri and a 13-yarder by Tyler Oshima to ice the 24-0 shutout.
In the loss, the JPW Koloa Redskins were strong, the defense raising its head and blocking two of the point-after kick attempts.
Lihu‘e Jr. Midget quarterback Aaron Renaud passed for two touchdowns, both in the third period, one going 32 yards to Lanakila Wilson and one going 28 yards to Keala Iwasaki for third period scores in its 28-0 win.
Iwasaki had earlier opened the scorebooks on his own in the first quarter by peeling off 31 yards for a touchdown, the score coming on a dive into the end zone on the far leftside with a Koloa defender challenging.
Wilson, whose sister Lilinoe was doing cheer duty with the JPW game, also scored a touchdown on his own, an 11-yard run to paydirt in the second period, Renaud gracing that score with the PAT.
Lihu‘e’s final score was reaped by Kainalu Rapozo who had a safety in the third period.
