WAILUA — Kai Harrison, scoring two goals for Nor14BQuinta, forced a shootout, Tuesday in the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 941 Boys Under 14 match at the Wailua Homesteads Park.
Harrison’s shot, which came from just short of midfield, as the clock wound down knotted the regulation match at 3-3 to force the shootout against East Matayos.
The Hornets, as the fans affectionately labelled East Matayos, had problems with its first goalkeeper in the shootout. The goalie hurt his left wrist after slapping down a sorely needed stop in the shootout.
Substituting a goalie, the Hornets gave up two goals while its final kicker’s shot soared over the crossbar to give Nor14Quinta, affectionately labelled by its fans as Northshore, the win 4-3 in the shootout.
Clifton Oliver ignited the Hornets’ fans with his long distance penalty shot which sailed past the Northshore goalie within the first two minutes of the opening tap.
But before two minutes could elapse on the opening goal, Northshore responded when Zion Still netted his goal on a second effort to knot the contest 1-1.
Both teams’ defense stiffened and effectively kept the ball out of the net on both sides of the field. Harrison interrupted the intense defensive slugfest with his first goal, the Northshore 2-1 go-ahead at the half.
The Hornets played the clock effectively when Willo Batol, also scoring two goals in the match, found his first net on a header off an Oliver corner kick within the first minute of the second half for the 2-2 deadlock.
Following more intense defensive play, Willo opened the final quarter of play on an almost full-field breakaway, beating out Northshore Joshua Spencer, a threat on the wing, for the goal and the 3-2 nod.
Sensing the end was near, the Hornets switched to defensive mode, but Harrison’s second goal emerged when he fired long up the middle, the shot soaring high above the defense and goalkeeper before settling into the net to force the shootout.
With the win, Northshore advances in the AYSO Region 941 Boys Under 14 playoffs which is expected to finish by the weekend.
The finalists of the Under 12 and Under 14 divisions meet their counterparts from AYSO, Region 940 during the Will Veech Inter-regional playoffs and finals which run Nov. 1 through 5 at Vidinha Stadium.
Kameron Parbo had a first-half score and Ryan Yavinsky netted a penalty kick in the second half to lead Koloa, 2-0 to the championship of the AYSO, Region 940 Boys Under 12 game which was played at Hanapepe Stadium.
Both Koloa and Hanapepe will be appearing at the Will Veech tournament.
