The victim’s name is Steve Kim of Ontario, Canada, according to the Kaua‘i Fire Department.
Kim was swept out to sea while swimming with his brother in the breakers about waist deep at Polihale Beach late Tuesday. A few minutes later, a surfer on the beach unsuccessfully attempted to locate the swimmer after his brother lost visual contact with him.
KFD Truck 7 arrived on the scene at 6:25 p.m. and three fire fighters entered the water and began their search. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter assisted in the search on Tuesday until 9 p.m.
Air 1 with Rescue 3 personnel onboard provided air search until dark Tuesday and resumed the search at daybreak Wednesday morning. The victim was located 30 yards offshore on the west end of Polihale Beach Park only a few minutes after Air 1 resumed the search around 7 a.m.
