LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School bowling teams sewed up the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling title Thursday night before a loud, celebratory audience at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
Darcie Vea, the top individualist in the girls division, rolled a single 166 game to help the Red Raider girls pile up a 2115 pinfall, ending the season undefeated.
Angelika Questin, No. 2 individualist for the girls, rolled the high game of 180 to help Kapa‘a to its 2017 pinfall followed by the Waimea girls ending with an 1874 pinfall with Kimberley Hoeckmann-Percival getting the high roll with 158, just four pins ahead of Janelle Papa (154) and Lacie Montemayor who ended with a 152.
The excitement centered around the boys’ matches where Germini Tangonan and Deman Alao each had 177 games to lead the Kaua‘i boys to a 2186 pinfall, just 15 pins ahead of Waimea who finished with a 2171 pinfall, led by Chase Ueno who posted a high 189.
Kaua‘i, after giving up top spots to both Waimea and Kapa‘a during the season, needed to place higher than second place to clinch the title.
Kapa‘a boys finished with a 1969 pinfall, but garnered the attention of the crowd late in the series as its top bowler, Randy Iloreta Jr., worked two lanes over Ueno in trying to finish tops.
Iloreta marked in the final three frames of his last game to finish with a high 205 for the boys.
Overall, Iloreta and Ueno, getting the top two individualist slots, will be joining the Kaua‘i teams at the Billy Tees Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state bowling championships in Hilo, Hawai‘i, Oct. 27 and 28, said Ross Shimabukuro, Kaua‘i High School athletic director.
Iloreta finishes as the top KIF boys individualist with a nine-game total 1880 pinfall for a 208.89 average followed by Ueno who ends with an 1873 pinfall for a 208.11 average.
Kyle Balisacan of Kaua‘i, rolling a 139 and 121, Thursday, sits in the No. 3 spot with a 1573 pinfall for a 174.78 average.
Shimabukuro said Kapa‘a’s Questin will be joining the Kaua‘i girls team at the state roll after finishing the season in the No. 2 spot with a 1469 pinfall for a 163.22 average.
Vea of Kaua‘i holds the top spot with a 1592 pinfall and a 176.89 average and Montemayor of Waimea fills in the No. 3 berth with a 1436 pinfall for a 159.56 pinfall.
