PUHI — The Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i Community College, joined the nation in a brief National Recycles Day event Tuesday.
“The Kaua‘i Recycles event is part of a national America Recycles program to promote recycling in our community,” said James Trujillo, an organizer for the event, in an email. “The goal of the fair is to raise awareness for students and staff about recycling opportunities on campus and in our community.”
Capitalizing on the heavy student traffic making its way to the cafeteria during the noontime hour, the county’s solid waste program had representatives on hand to answer questions as well as talk about the different recycling avenues available through the county.
KKCR Radio, working through the efforts of the KCC Radio Club, offered up a broadcast of the event which featured several informational tables, exhibits, demonstrations and the airing of “Tapped” in the student lounge. Additionally, an interview with Ho‘ouluwehi Director Eric Knutzen was scheduled for after the 2 p.m. closing.
EnviroFusion was offering reusable bags, bamboo eating utensils, stainless steel lunch boxes, glass straws and stainless steel beverage containers — alternatives to the normal disposable items used to hold food and beverages.
“My wife has one of those lunch containers and they’re really good,” said Pat Gegen, visiting from Kalaheo. “Kaua‘i County Council Vice Chair JoAnn Yukimura also carries one set of these eating utensils in her purse, and when she goes to events uses it instead of taking the plastic utensils.”
Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on Nov. 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day, states its website.
More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States.
