LIHU‘E — The volunteers started shredding turkey since 9 a.m. Tuesday and were almost done by the time Kokua Soup Kitchen volunteers needed to start dinner at the Salvation Army, Lihu‘e Corps.
Meanwhile, Dimples Kano and Katie Beer awaited the arrival of the pumpkin pies, armed with their pizza cutters at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
This was part of the preparation for the 49th Annual Community Thanksgiving Lunch which will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the convention hall.
“We have a lot of entertainment, so we might start early,” Salvation Army Major Mario Reyes said. “The mayor is expected to be here to carve the first bird and lunch will be served.”
The annual luncheon is open to the community at the convention hall and at the Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corps.
For the Lihu‘e lunch, Reyes said they have prepared 50 turkeys in anticipation of 800 sit-down meals and a couple of hundred take-outs after the lunch is completed.
“The Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club cooked 30 of the turkeys and 10 birds went to the King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School,” Reyes said. “This year, we have the Sheraton Kaua‘i as one of the new people, cooking 10 turkeys.”
The Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa is preparing the meal for the Hanapepe Corps.
Beer said Russ Talvi of 22 North is in charge of the dessert and worked with the Kaua‘i Community College Culinary Arts Department for the pumpkin pies.
Members of the Kaua‘i High School Key Club arrived with armloads of merchandise, finishing up the decorating with a large Thanksgiving banner, setting up the centerpieces and creating more novelty Thanksgiving memorabilia utilizing cans of Vienna sausage and Cup Noodles.
Reyes said because of Department of Health regulations, all take out orders must be picked up at the commercial kitchen located at the Lihu‘e Corps across the street from the convention hall. Take outs will be available only after the sit-down service is completed.
