PUHI — Healthy food does not need to cost a lot, said Turquiose “Toto” Santos who is in charge of the Healthy Choice option at the Kaua‘i Community College cafeteria.
The Healthy Choice program is in its second year, being funded in part by a grant promoting healthy eating and lifestyle. Santos, a graduate of Kaua‘i High School, works hard to offer a variety of healthy food choices at the cafeteria.
“People are into healthy food,” Santos said. “We get a lot of people who come in looking for offerings which are healthy and still satisfy their appetites.”
Mel Bacio, the cafeteria manager, said there is a wide variety of food offered at the college eatery which is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, while school is in session.
Bearing in mind students don’t have a lot of time to enjoy meals, the cafeteria offers a tuna, egg, ham and cheese and turkey cold sandwiches along with a variety of salads including Chef’s Salad, Tuna Tomato, specialty and pasta.
A fresh offering of homemade desserts along with cookies and ice cream are in the refrigerated case with assorted fountain and canned drinks to wash everything down.
Convenience foods include pizz pockets, S&S Saimin, cheeseburgers, sausage and cheese biscuit, and Philly Steak Sandwich.
With breakfast and lunch in the scope of its operating hours, the KCC cafeteria breakfast menu offers eggs of any style, breakfast meat, rice, hash browns or toast, omeletes, pancakes, French Toast, and Loco Mocos.
The short order grill offers hamburgers, cheeseburgers, Tuna Melt, Grand Turkey Club, Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, and Fries.
“The easiest way is to visit the KCC website and click on the ‘Lunch’ section,” Bacio said.
When activated, the listing includes the week’s selection of plate lunch specials, the Healthy Choices option, the Sandwich Special of the week and the Fine Dining menu for the week.
“We know people like good food that doesn’t cost much,” Santos said. “No make shame. Come down and taste the cheap eats which is healthy.”
