KOLOA — Father Arsenius Walsh founded St. Rafael’s Church in Koloa on Dec. 25, 1841. It was the first Catholic Church on Kaua‘i and a place of worship for immigrant plantation workers from the Koloa Plantation.
A celebration of St. Rafael’s Church’s 170th anniversary will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the historic church grounds located at 3011 Hapa Rd., Koloa.
Shelly Gerardo, secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council, said the whole family is invited to a fun-filled day featuring ono food, baked goods, fruits and vegetables, fun games, water slides and rides, entertainment, a silent auction and craft fair.
Food booths will be offered by the host, St. Rafael’s Church, as well as by St. Theresa School, Holy Cross Church and Catholic Charities of Hawai‘i.

Due to the fun-filled celebration, the church’s 5 p.m. Mass on Dec. 10 is canceled.
