LIHU‘E — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of State Parks announced Friday it auctioned all of the 16 available recreational cabin lots in Koke‘e and Waimea Canyon state parks in the first scheduled tier of the auction held Thursday at the Kaua‘i War Memorial in Lihu‘e.
“We are very pleased with the positive response to the auction from the people of Kaua‘i,” DLNR Chair William Aila Jr. said. “The department is also pleased to welcome the new lessees who appreciate these rustic cabins nestled in this beautiful forest environment, and that will also preserve the cabins and in doing so help sustain and perpetuate their history into the future for Koke‘e.”
The winning bidders represented a broad cross-section of the Kaua‘i community who will now enjoy 20-year recreation residence leases, the DLNR stated in a press release.
Under the lease terms, the lessees are allowed to use the cabins for no more than 90 consecutive days, for a total of 180 days per year.
The new leases will contribute to the Division of State Parks efforts to generate new sources of critically needed revenue for operation of Hawai‘i statewide parks system, stated the DLNR.
Provided each of the bidders fulfills their post-auction responsibilities, the second and third tiers of the auction may not be necessary. Pre-qualified bidders may call the Division of State Parks for further details.
