KAPA‘A — Mariyah Oliver netted 14 points to lead the Waimea High School girls basketball to a 52-24 win over Kapa‘a, Friday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
The Kapa‘a girls stayed close to the Menehune in the opening quarter, paced by Kekai Gonsalves netting six of Kapa‘a’s 11 first-quarter points and a nice three-ball from Reggie McCabe.
But Waimea, got a nice lead after Kapa‘a was assessed a pre-game technical. Chyanne Duarte sunk her pair of foul shots and added another on the inbound play to start the game.
Despite McCabe’s three-ball to pull Kapa‘a back on the court, Waimea stayed ahead 14-11 at the end of the frame, Duarte finishing with six points and low posts Paige Connelly and Mariyah Oliver each adding four points.
Waimea opened the second quarter, and working behind treys from Shayna Alop and Duarte, continued to build its lead, never losing the edge for the remainder of the game.
Kapa‘a discovered Cherrilyn Coloma’s hot hand in the second half, Coloma finishing with eight points, including a 2-for-6 showing at the free throw line, to lead the Warriors’ scoring. All of her points came in the second half.
Gonsalves, after tucking in her six points, continued to be key in moving the ball for Kapa‘a until leaving the game in the second half with an injury.
Ka‘anoe Matayoshi added five points and picked up four fouls while guarding Waimea’s guard Vakeesha Lagazo. Pairs from Lucyancy Harper and Meleane Moala rounded out the effort.
Olvier topped the Waimea effort, ending with a 2-for-7 showing at the charity line followed by Connelly ending with 13 points and Duarte adding nine points.
Alop ended with eight points, including two treys while Lagazo finished with four points and Ulu Matagiese coming off the bench for a pair.
Earlier, the Warriors edged the Menehune with a 50-40 win.
Despite a paltry showing at the free-throw line, Nicole Palacio finished with 19 points, almost half of Waimea’s total game production.
Sierra Shigematsu, the Warriors’ JV center, finished with 14 points, all from field goals, in Kapa‘a’s victory. Guard Charlene Hanie added eight points and Shai-Anne Abigania finished with nine points, including a 7-for-12 performance on the foul line.
Ariel Cummings finished with five points and Kaylee Silva and Mailekalukea Tuttle each tucked away four points with pairs from Kristen Yam and Tayzia Goodwin rounding out the math.
Following Palacio’s game-high shooting, Waimea got 10 points from Sienna Santiago, including one from outside the three-point arc and a 1-for-3 free throws, and seven points from guard Taylor Gaspar, including a perfect 2-for-2 record at the foul line. Chalene Alicante and Bailey San Agustin-Nordmeier added pairs in the effort.
Kaua‘i guard Kristle Henry lit up the hoop with a game-high 22 points to lead the Red Raiders to a 57-30 romp over the Island School Voyagers in a single match in Puhi.
Casey Anacleto, whose barrage of three-balls helped Kaua‘i over Waimea Tuesday, stayed inside the three-point arc against Island School, finishing with 14 points and Kawehi Louis-Diamond, the solid No. 3 player, added 11 points in the win. Jennifer Grady and Bristy Agu each finished with five points.
