LIHU‘E — Jarrett Chytka, manager of Kaua‘i’s Kmart store, was pleasantly surprised Tuesday morning.
Chytka and Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry were hosting the annual Shop with a Cop program at Kmart, where 50 children had an opportunity to go shopping with a police officer as part of a program coordinated by Children’s Justice Center.
“There was a customer shopping who saw the excitement and wanted to find out what was happening,” Chytka said. “She came to the customer service desk and offered a donation after learning what was taking place.”
Rosie Carillo of the Children’s Justice Center said she and Chytka put together the list of 50 children who could use some sunshine in their holiday.
The children were treated to breakfast at Little Caesar’s Pizza, visited with Santa and his helpers, who offered each child a Kmart gift card to select gifts and departed on their private shopping spree, escorted by one of Kaua‘i’s men in blue.
Following the shopping, the children were offered the opportunity to visit Kaua‘i Police Department’s Mobile Incident Command vehicle parked outside the store. The presence of the command vehicle combined with the number of police vehicles caused many shoppers to scratch their heads in wonderment.
“This shopper came up to the desk and wanted to know what was happening,” said Jorene Pikini, a customer service representative. “After I explained, she asked if she could make a contribution. I thought she was going to give $10 or $20, but instead, she gave $200.”
Kmart is open until 11:45 p.m. through Dec. 23 and will be open on Christmas eve from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
