LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Planning Commission will have a new chair. The commission Tuesday unanimously confirmed Jan Kimura, one of the commission’s more vocal members, as the commission’s chair for 2012.
Kimura and Commissioner Hartwell Blake missed much of the commission meeting Tuesday morning because their presence was required at a simultaneously held special Kaua‘i County Council meeting, where both had to go through an interview following their mayoral re-appointment to the commission.
The Kaua‘i County Council today will vote on 11 resolutions to confirm theirs and nine additional appointments or re-appointments to several county boards and commissions.
At the end of the morning, back at the commission meeting, Kimura and Blake found out their volunteer positions will have extra weight — and possibly an added workload — after Kimura was named commission chair and Blake was confirmed as vice-chair.
Kimura’s first action as chair was to nominate Commissioner Herman Texeira, who had just stepped down as chair, to become the subdivision committee chair. Kimura also appointed Blake and Commissioner Camilla Matsumoto to the three-person committee. Matsumoto will be the committee’s vice-chair.
Kimura has been among the commissioners who have repeatedly questioned developments which have reportedly not followed the rules. His lively quotes have included “This is called frustration at its finest,” “Illegal is illegal, isn’t it?” and “If he’s breaking the law now, do you still want us to give him the certificate and say go ahead?”
