On a night devoted to the Kapa‘a seniors, it was a Waimea sophomore that came through with the game on the line.
Waimea’s Jenaiah Banasihan drained two free throws in the last minute to ice a 40-38 hard-fought victory over the Kapa‘a Warriors on Tuesday night at Kapa‘a High School on the Warriors’ senior night.
The Menehune win comes off the heels of a big victory over Kaua‘i High School on Saturday. The Menehune and Red Raiders both have one second-round loss with both teams having one game remaining in the round.
The Menehune were led by 15 points from Cheyanne Duarte, while Vakeesha Lagazo added 13.
The Warriors had a shot to tie the game following a steal on a Waimea inbound pass with seven seconds remaining, but a Reggie McCabe jumper clanged off the rim as time expired to seal the Menehune victory.
McCabe tried her best to bring the Warriors back into contention in the third quarter. The Warriors senior scored six points in a row in the third on her way to a team high 10 points. Kapa‘a’s Ka‘anoi Marshall added in eight points for the Warriors.
The Menehune win coming down to shots at the line was no surprise. Waimea forced its way to the line 36 times in the game. The Menehune converted 22 of those attempts.
Meanwhile, the Warriors struggled at the line, completing only six of 19 free throw attempts.
The Menehune take the court for their regular season finale Friday night at Island School. The Warriors will travel to face the Red Raiders at Kaua‘i High School.
Kaua‘i’s game against Island School on Tuesday night was not reported before The Garden Island went to press.
