A high surf warning is in effect through Thursday morning for all north- and west-facing shores. Waves from Hanalei to Kekaha are expected to rise up to 35 feet.
Ocean Safety officials urge beachgoers to stay completely out of the water on the north shore and at west facing beaches because of dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents. The National Weather Service warns that rip currents may easily overpower even strong swimmers.
Coastal residents should make preparations to protect life and property from large waves and possible flooding, according to a county news release.
