KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a Junior Varsity boys basketball team kept its record intact, defeating the Waimea JV boys 52-45 Tuesday night at Bernice Hundley Gym.
“We clinched the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation JV title with the win during the last game,” said John Kaneholani of the JV coaching staff. “With the win, tonight we’ve got just one game left and the season is over.”
Breaking a 9-9 stalemate following the first quarter, Kapa‘a broke open for a 22-7 second quarter score and never looked back, the second quarter scoring being led by Keali‘i Colipano netting 12 of the team’s 22 points in the period. Colipano finished the night with 21 points, the second period being his most productive.
Both teams deadlocked with 13 points in the third period and Kapa‘a eked out an 18-16 performance in the final period to take the seven-point victory.
Following Colipano, whose older brother Kainoa was celebrating his senior night with the varsity team, leading that victory with a game-high 20 points, Michael Booth and Angelito Roslin each finished with seven points.
Kana‘i Thomas marked five first-half points, including a three-ball in the opening quarter, the second Warrior score in the game, with Keli‘ikoa Baclayon, Bryden Salvador, Matt Cummings, Denmark Aladin and Grant Mitchell each marking four points in the win.
Waimea, playing with a bench of just two, saw Mark Abalos and Peterson Lahip lead the charge, Abalos finishing with 12 points and Lahip adding 10 points.
Jamin Fernandez added seven points and Henry Delos Reyes finished with six points, followed by Charlie Kahepu‘u ending with five marks.
A pair from Darren Sagucio in the final stanza rounded out the effort.
Kapa‘a next meets Kaua‘i High School in its final season game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Kaua‘i High School gym. The varsity game follows the JV contest.
