KAPA‘A — Coach Luther Yam thought he was going to be able to take life a little easier following the football season.
But aspiring football players had other ideas.
“A group of them came to see if I could help coach,” Yam said following one of two mandatory practices Wednesday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium. “Right now, we have about 30 students in the Elementary division and about the same amount in the Intermediate (school) division.”
Na Koa football, as the Kapa‘a group is labelled, joins the Kaua‘i Bulldogs, the group practicing in Lihu‘e, as the Kaua‘i Youth Football program headed by Brad Hiranaka, a long-time football coach at high school and Pop Warner levels.
The Kaua‘i Youth Football league was established in August, 2009 to promote the wholesome development of youth through their association with adult leaders in the sport of American football.
KYF’s goal for 2012 is to continue to develop three divisions across the island, providing KYF players with a safe, effective and competitive season.
Hiranaka said with the first games coming up in March, KYF is accepting registration and sponsorships for its Third Annual Golf Tournament which will help the league in purchasing uniforms, helmets, shoulder pads, and other practice equipment.
The tournament will play Mar. 25 at the Wailua Golf Course where registration starts at 6 p.m. followed by a shotgun start at 7 a.m.
Registration to this fund-raising tournament is $100 per golfer and includes lunch, cart and green fees, the luncheon and awards banquet being held at Richie’s Bar and Grill in Lihu‘e following play.
Mulligans are also available at $5 each with a maximum of three.
Additionally a Hole-in-One contest earning a 2012 Toyota truck is available at $10 per shot, and a Closest to the Pin contest is $5 per shot on selected Par 3 holes for a cash prize.
Tournament format is a three-person scramble with a maximum handicap of 36 for men and 40 for women.
Hole sponsorships are available at $100 along with different levels of sponsorships, the Bronze Sponsor being from $300 to $499, the Silver Sponsor being from $500 to $699, the Gold Sponsor being from $700 to $999 and the Platinum Sponsor being from $1,000 to 1,999 and including three complimentary players.
A Diamond Sponsorship is also available for contributions of more than $2,000 and includes six complimentary players.
Hiranaka said in order to have the proper signage and identifications available, sponsorships are encouraged to be in by Mar. 10.
