Jannin Hashizume of Kaua‘i High School and Shane Nishioka-Healy of Kapa‘a High School were named Players of the Year for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls and boys soccer programs.
The announcement was made by Diane Nitta of the KIF on Friday during the release of the 2012 KIF Soccer All-Star teams.
Kaua‘i High School girls soccer, the KIF champions, placed five players on the squad with its coach, Reiko Yoshida, being named Coach of the Year.
In boys soccer, Nishioka-Healy, recently named to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II All-Tournament team, is joined by four other Warriors, including Ty Shiramizu, an All-Tournament team selection, on the KIF All-Star team. Warriors coach Kevin Cram received Coach of the Year honors.
Daniel Alonzo, Josh Cram and Dylan Devin are the three other Kapa‘a players named to the KIF All-Star boys team.
Devan Banasihan-Kenney, key to handing Kapa‘a one of its season losses, is joined by Waimea defender Craig Medeiros on the KIF team. Midfielder Ryan Perez, key to Island School’s scoring in the season, is joined by Garret Beyer in the goalkeeper spot.
Kaua‘i High School rounds out the selection with Lucas Gushikuma as midfielder, Abel Antonio Aguilar Aguirre and Blaise Ferguson as defenders, and Grant Basquez getting the Utility nod.
In girls soccer, Hashizume, also a Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II All-Tournament team selection, is joined by Alyssa “Malu” Vegas in the forward position, Cascade Mayer and Tyra Tandal as defenders and Isabelle Jasmine Curtis getting the Utility nod.
Rachel Hinkel from Kapa‘a fills the second forward position, joined by Cassie Wilson and Sierra Riemer as midfielders, with Mia Cabulisan in defense and Madeline Rausch getting the nod for goalkeeper.
Holly Kai‘akapu of Waimea fills the third forward position, joined by Ember Teter, known on the field as “E.T.,” in the defensive slot.
During the KIF season, the Kapa‘a girls earned a spot in the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state games through a play-in game, eventually ending in fourth place following a loss to Kaua‘i High School on O‘ahu. The Red Raiders finished the state tournament in third place.
The Kapa‘a boys finished second at the state championships after dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Honoka‘a High School in the final nine minutes of play of the Division II title game.
