LIHU‘E — Willis Batol and Kristle Henry have been named the 2012 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation basketball players of the year.
Batol, a guard for the Kapa‘a Warriors, tore up defenses this year with his ball handling skills and slick passes, and caused nightmares on the defensive end with his speed.
Henry, a guard for the state runner-up Kaua‘i Red Raiders, dominated the girls’ game this season. Henry could score from the inside on a slick layup just as easily as she could pull up for a three.
In addition to the players of the year, the KIF also announced its all-star teams.
On the boys’ side, the KIF champion Warriors placed forward Kainoa Colipano and Lance Miyashiro on the team in addition to Batol. Kaili Lagundino-Schumacher was the lone Waimea representative, while Donavon Harrison and Mikal Moranz made the list for the Red Raiders.
On the girls’ team, the Red Raiders placed three on the roster with Bristy Agu, Kawehi Louis-Diamond and Casey Anacleto making the list. Reggie McCabe made the roster for the Warriors, Vakeesha Lagazo for the Menehune, and Lauren Claypoole made the team as a representative for the Island School Voyagers.
For leading their KIF teams to their respective titles, Kapa‘a head coach Phillip Baclayon and Kaua‘i’s Sandi Nadatani-Mendez were named the 2012 KIF coaches of the year.
