Kaua‘i’s Malia Manuel advanced through Round 3 of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast 2012 surfing competition in Australia Sunday.
Working through two- to three-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Manuel got past Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons with a two-wave total 14.53 over Fitzgibbons’ 12.90 in the first heat.
From the opening waves, Manuel controlled the heat, marking a 6.50 on her first wave while Fitzgibbons settled for a 5.07.
On her second wave, Manuel posted a 6.60 average leaving the other two girls playing catch-up. Her best wave, the fifth in the eight-wave series, placed her over with a 7.93 average. Fitzgibbons made a final push in her last wave, marking a 6.60 average before the heat ran out.
Courtney Conlogue of the Mainland settled for third with a 10.64 two-wave total.
Other winners in Round 3 include Australia’s Tyler Wright taking the first heat with a 16.20.
Laura Enever of Australia topped Heat 2 with a 16.83, relegating Coco Ho (13.57) of Hawai‘i to third place in the heat.
Stephanie Gilmore of Australia topped Heat 4 with a 16.73 over Sofia Mulanovich (11.27) of Peru and Lakey Peterson from the Mainland.
