PO‘IPU — Tennis enthusiasts from around the island managed to raise more than $7,500 for the Kaua‘i United Way during 2011.
On the eve of the Kaua‘i Tennis Club’s Charity Doubles tennis tournament which opens Saturday, organizers Herb and Krystyna Noe and Carolyn Caylor, General Manager of the Po‘ipu Kai Association, presented Kaua‘i United Way representatives with a check for $7,654, representing proceeds from the 2011 Charity Doubles series played at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
Saturday, the Kaua‘i Tennis Club opens its 2012 calendar with another Charity Mixed Doubles, proceeds which will benefit the KUW.
“We are immensely grateful the biggest tennis tournament on Kaua‘i keeps getting bigger and better and providing more resources for social services here on our island,” said Scott Giarman, executive director for Kaua‘i United Way, in accepting the contribution along with Doug Sears, co-chair of the KUW Annual Campaign, and Lynette Medrano-Stine, Community and Campaign Coordinator. “This tournament draws players from all over the island — Kekaha to Hanalei. It is only fitting the beneficiary be the Kaua‘i United Way which serves the entire island community with dozens and dozens of social service programs, right here on Kaua‘i.”
Krystyna said people who come to cheer the players and get lunch at Kalapaki Joe’s, overlooking the battery of tennis courts, for a special price of $10 will also be helping the Kaua‘i United Way and its 28 Participating Agencies .
The Charity Doubles tennis tournament starts at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
