KALAHEO — Lexton Camat took advantage of his experience on the hardwoods, piling up 12 points to lead Hanakila to a 51-22 win over Papalina-Blue Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Camat is not the only returnee for the North Shore team made up of players from the Hanalei-Kilauea area and coached by Mike Stevens.
Rafael and Hero Roslin and Dutch Fairbanks also have seen Hanakila action in previous leagues, said Karen Matsumoto of the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association, coordinator of the officials’ table.
Camat was joined by Diego Hernandez and Fairbanks who each tucked in seven points for the Hanakila win.
Wade Pimsacouan topped the Papalina-Blue scoring with 11 points followed by Makana Tavita adding nine points and Luke Hunadi with a pair. Dale Keep is the coach for Papalina-Blue.
After several seasons of Kamikaze girls, the Kamikaze boys, coached by veteran coach Keven Hanano, made its debut, dropping to the Kaua‘i Ballers, 30-11 in the second matchup of the county’s youth basketball league for students in the fourth through sixth grades.
Former Kapa‘a High School basketball standout Kekoa Colipano took the reins of the Kaua‘i Ballers who got 10 points apiece from Somi Fonua and Teili Fonua. Hunter Bethel added four points in the win.
Blake Probasco netted six points to lead the Kamikaze effort followed by Leeon Runny and Travis Duran adding three and two points, respectively.
The girls in grades four through six take the floor for the first time, Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when Kaulupono unveils its young squad against Hanakila starting at 6 p.m. followed by Team Lihu‘e 01 taking on Team Lihu‘e 02 starting at 7 p.m.
Coach Max Manera of Team Lihu‘e said former Kaua‘i High School alumni are in the coaches’ box for each of the Team Lihu‘e teams.
The boys next take the floor, Tuesday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center when the Lihu‘e Kamikaze go up against Papalina-Blue starting at 6 p.m. followed by Hanakila taking on Papalina-Orange at 7 p.m.
