PUHI — The Kaua‘i Quilt Guild meets every second Sunday afternoon at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School to make quilts for families in need.
“We have about 30 members who come from all over the island,” Linda Kobayashi said. “This is a time everyone can come together, have fun making quilts and just enjoy quilting.”
Kobayashi said quilts produced by guild members are destined for two beneficiaries — Child Protective Service and the YWCA Women’s Shelter.
During the holidays, Kobayashi and other Guild members delivered a load of quilts to the CPS office in the state building, but she said the quilts are a year-round project.
“They need quilts all the time,” she said. “Not just at Christmas and the holidays.”
Teresa Morita, one of the guild members, said she enjoys the get-togethers. The time spent making the quilts is “stress relief” for Morita, she said.
“I have to explore a lot of different things to do after I retire,” said Suzanne Kashiwaeda of Koloa Elementary School. “One day, I’m going to retire and I need to know what I’m going to do.”
Kobayashi said anyone who enjoys quilting is welcome to visit the organization’s monthly meetings.
“We all use sewing machines to quilt. There was one person who came and was disappointed because we don’t do quilts by hand sewing,” she said.
