The Kaua‘i Marathon was named one of the Top 100 Road Races in North America by the bestroadraces.com website.
The Honolulu Marathon, celebrating its 38th year, was the only other Hawai‘i race to be listed.
To be considered for the list, the race must be recommended by a reputable runner who has participated in the race, states a news release from the Kaua‘i Marathon. Other measures include awards, aid stations, gift bags, and runners’ experiences during race festivities.
With accolades from several elite runners who participated in the 2011 event and positive comments from participants on marathonguide.com and other race websites, The Kaua‘i Marathon was honored with the Top 100 status.
“The magnitude of this standing is unprecedented for a race which has only been in existence for three years,” Kaua‘i Marathon spokesperson Robin Jumper said in the release. “Running races and participants have grown exponentially over the past 40 years. There are thousands of running events around the county and The Kaua‘i Marathon is proud to be considered one of the best.”
Running USA’s Annual Marathon Report from 2010 shows 507,000 people finished full marathons while 1,385,000 finished half marathons in the United States, both statistics breaking records in their respective categories.
The Kaua‘i Marathon will host Bob Anderson, founder of the bestroadraces.com website and Runner’s World magazine, when he travels to Kaua‘i on Sept. 2 to run the half-marathon as one of the 50 races he is going to participate in in 2012.
The Fourth Annual Kaua‘i Marathon is scheduled Sept. 2 in Po‘ipu, offering marathon and half marathon distances certified by USATF and AIMS.
