LIHU‘E — The Lihu‘e Baseball League’s Mustang Orioles were on the job during the Presidents’ Day holiday, honing their skills at Isenberg Park.
The league opens its Bronco and Mustang season on Saturday with four games on tap at the Lihu‘e County Park, home of the LBL program.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled to take place between the first games, which start at 8 a.m., and the 11 a.m. and 11:30 am. start of the second games, according to the LBL online calendar.
Joining the Orioles in the Mustang Division are the Cardinals, Giants, Phillies, Rangers and Yankees. The Phillies, Marlins, Brewers and Tigers play in the Bronco Division.
The LBL was born in 1952 to instill the ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and reverence in the boys of the community as the Lihu‘e Boys Baseball League, the LBL website states.
Little League’s Indians, Tigers, Senators, Orioles, White Sox, Yankees, Red Sox and Athletics made up the initial core of teams organized for boys ages 9 through 15.
The tee-ball division was later introduced for youngsters between ages 6 and 9. In 1995, girls were permitted to participate, bringing forth the current LBL nomenclature.
Today, the LBL is made up of five age group divisions playing entirely in the National Protect Our Nation’s Youth League. Divisions include the Shetland (5-7 years), Pinto (7-9 years), Mustang (9-11 years), Bronco (11-13 years) and Pony (13-14 years).
Nani Sadora is the LBL president this year. Taddy Penzetta is vice president, and Brandee Abreu is treasurer.
