LIHU‘E — A short blessing and dedication on Tuesday marked the start of the move of the Kaua‘i Fire Department headquarters to its new location at the Lihu‘e Civic Center.
The new facilities will take up two floors and basement at the Pi‘ikoi Building at 4444 Rice St.
The new headquarters will also house the Training Bureau, Fire Prevention Bureau and the Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Bureau.
“We are very excited to move into our new location,” Kaua‘i Fire Chief Robert Westerman said.
“The new headquarters will be closer to other county offices and allows our personnel the space to function more efficiently,” Westerman said.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., assisting Westerman during the untying of the symbolic maile lei, said that in addition to the fire department, the facility will serve as an alternate Emergency Operations Center, as well as an alternate dispatch center.
Currently, the KFD headquarters, training facility and Ocean Safety Bureau are located at the Hale Pumehana Building on Akahi Street.
During the move, the KFD offices will not accept walk-in appointments through April 2. Computer access also will be limited.
