HONOLULU — The University of Hawai‘i Rainbows completed their four-game home series with Central Michigan University on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with the Chippewas.
Following an impressive 5-1 win on Friday, the Rainbows continued to play strong in the first game on Saturday.
Led by starting pitcher, freshman Scott Squier, the Rainbows edged CMU 2-1.
Squier pitched four out of the doubleheader-shorted seven-inning game, striking out five batters while allowing four hits and no runs.
At the plate, Hawai‘i struck first in the third inning with a Max Duval RBI double.
The Rainbows padded their lead in the sixth inning. Collin Bennett singled to reach base and was eventually driven in by a Pi‘kea Kitamura sacrifice fly.
The Chippewas made things interesting in the seventh inning. Brent Harrison relieved David Longville — who pitched 2.2 innings of relief for Squier — but faced runners on second and third with two outs upon entering the game.
CMU’s William Arnold, who went 3- for-3 in the game, drove in a runner to cut the lead to one run, but Harrison forced a groundout to end the game.
In the second game of the day, the Rainbows couldn’t make up an early two-run deficit and dropped the game, 3-1, to the Chippewas.
CMU scored two runs in the second inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. UH got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single from Bennett, but CMU starting pitcher Ryan Longstreth held the Rainbows back for six innings, while Patrick Kaminska pitched the seventh inning for the save.
The Rainbow loss in the second game evened the four game series at two games apiece.
Hawai‘i now has an 11-6 record and will play San Francisco in the final series of its 21-game home stand, beginning Thursday.
