LIHU‘E — Aniase Soltren threw a no-hitter, Daeja Cummings conked an in-the-park home run and Karlyee Malapit cranked a 3-RBI three-bagger to lead Kaua‘i High School to a 14-0 win over Kapa‘a on Wednesday at Isenberg Park.
“I’ve been around high school for quite a while, including the time my daughter played, and I don’t ever recall a no-hitter,” Michael Koerte, one of the scorekeepers, said following the game shortened to five innings by the 10-run ruling. “It’s been a while since we’ve seen a no-hitter.”
En route to pitching a no-hitter, Soltren struck out five Warrior batters, including three straight, two in the third and the first in the fourth innings.
“This would have been a perfect game except for the two errors,” Ross Shimabukuro, Kaua‘i’s athletic director, said following the game, the miscues taking place in the fourth and fifth innings, but the runners left stranded.
Offensively, the Red Raiders charged, scoring five runs in the first inning and adding seven more runs in the second inning.
Collectively, Kaua‘i bats marked 10 hits while the Kapa‘a pitching gave up seven walks, hit two batters and struck out two batters, both going down in the third inning.
First baseperson Cummings topped the Raiders’ lumberyard with a homerun in the third inning, a solo shot to deep leftfield, and a single, scoring twice and marking two RBI.
Malapit finished with a three-RBI triple, her only hit in the game, but scored twice in the win.
Ka‘a La‘amea finished with two hits, scored twice and marked two RBIs.
Kyana Hirokane, triggering the Mickey Rat chant in the box, finished by scoring twice, marked two hits and two RBIs.
Soltren, in addition to her performance on the mound, marked two RBIs on a single in the second inning.
With the win, Kaua‘i improves to 1-1 after dropping to Waimea last Wednesday in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season opener.
Kaua‘i hosts Waimea, 3-0 following its twin-bill win over Kapa‘a, in a double-header on Saturday at Isenberg Park, the first pitch going at 10 a.m.
