LIHU‘E — Sunday breakfast was on the menu for the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i and the Kaua‘i High School baseball boosters to raise funds for students.
The Kaua‘i High School baseball boosters offered a drive-up car wash, and occupants of the vehicle could enjoy a “super breakfast” while waiting on the car to be washed at Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall as a fundraiser for the Red Raider baseball team.
Just over the knoll, the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i got help from Key Club members of both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a high schools in hosting its annual French Toast Breakfast at Elsie Wilcox Elementary School to fund the Kiwanis scholarship and training programs.
Doors to the Kiwanis breakfast opened at 6:30 a.m. although Kiwanis Club members and Key Club members were on hand in advance to cut the fresh fruit, said Mary Pigao, a Kiwanis Club member.
Mary Lardizabal, director of the Kapa‘a Middle School ‘Ukulele Band and Chorus, said her students have performed at the Kiwanis event for seven years. This year, diners were treated to award-winning music since the group recently returned from the Heritage Music Festival in California with several big awards, she said.
Joining the band, kumu hula Kaua‘i Punua brought forth a variety of hula from Hula Keiki o Kauaikapulani and, following the Kapa‘a Middle School group, the Tsunami Taiko under Joann Parongao took the stage with “quiet” drumming.
Kiwanis Club member Florence Teshima said an estimated 1,500 breakfasts were served, surpassing last year’s event.
One of the new features for this year’s breakfast was the on-site waste management station being manned by Key Club students collecting napkins and food containers.
