LIHU‘E — Having good character brought rewards to three Kapa‘a Elementary School fourth-grade students on Saturday.
The students earned top honors from the Kaua‘i Family and Community Education during its recent “Character Counts” contest and were honored along with their families at the group’s monthly luncheon at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
Courtney Apo, named the third-place winner of the KFCE award, said being a good citizen is to not bully other people, smoke marijuana, or drink and drive.
If you do, you’ll end up in jail where they punish people and you’ll get yelled at a lot, she said, attracting laughter from the KFCE audience.
Makana Lei Fernandez, another Kapa‘a Elementary student, said being a good citizen in school is to be prepared to learn and not coming to school tired.
Another trait of a good citizen is to participate in the Hi5 Recycling program.
“That is being a good citizen in school, and life, too,” Fernandez, the KFCE second-place winner, said.
Gavin Acob was a double winner. His first place piece was sent to the Hawai‘i Association Family and Community Education contest, where he was named a second-place winner.
He said being a good citizen means obeying the laws and being prepared.
The three students were chosen from among about 100 entries from fourth-grade students around Kaua‘i.
For their efforts, Apo received a certificate and $25 for third place, Fernandez accepted a certificate and $50 for secondplace, and Acob accepted a certificate and $75 for first place, plus another $75 and certificate for his second-place win at the state contest.
