PO‘IPU — Lani-Rae Green of Waimea received the top seed in the Girls Singles for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying tennis tournament which opened Thursday at the Kiahuna Tennis Club in Po‘ipu.
According to Kaua‘i High School coach Charles Fulks, the top two in each category — boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles and girls doubles — will earn the right to represent the KIF at the upcoming Carlsmith Ball Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state tennis tournaments on O‘ahu.
Green lost little time advancing to the quarterfinal Thursday, taking down Kapa‘a’s Cassidy Yatsko, 6-0, 6-0 to advance against another Kapa‘a player, Casey Nakamura, seeded fourth in the tournament, who earned her advance by default over Island School’s Lauren Claypoole Thursday.
Greg Gonsalves, the Kapa‘a High School athletic director and in charge of the scorer’s table, said they plan to play up until the semifinals Thursday with the semis and finals playing Friday at the Kiahuna Tennis Club. No announced starting time was available for the Friday matches.
Island School’s April Oo received the No. 3 seed in Girls Singles, opening with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Waimea’s Mary Yasay.
“This is good,” said Island School coach Ernie Blachowiak. “Every one is playing to seed and so far, they’ve been no surprises.”
Waimea’s Brittney Barreira earned the No. 2 seed for Girls Singles, advancing in her opening match, 6-0, 6-1 against Sachi de Treaux of Island School and meeting Oo in the semifinals.
Island School’s Ryan Perez received the top seed for the Boys Singles, opening his round by facing teammate Garett Beyer who advanced following a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kapa‘a’s Jonathan Obiano Thursday.
Christopher Ajimura of Waimea earned the No. 2 seed for the Boys Singles, opening against Island School’s Dylan Morrison-Fogel while Kapa‘a’s Kai Harrison, getting the No. 3 seed, opened against Kaleo Hauata of Waimea. Bradley Cano of Waimea earned the No. 4 seed, working hard against Kapa‘a’s Kalani Murakami during the opening round Thursday.
Kaua‘i High School boys controlled the top two seeds in the Boys Doubles division, the team of Jerik Centeno and Matthew Kanna earning the division’s top seed and opened against the Waimea team of Geoffrey Alayvilla and James Andres.
Rad Floria teamed with Kevin Jian to earn the No. 2 seed for Kaua‘i High School, the pair opening against Mark Razalan and Chris Corpuz.
Kapa‘a’s Reginald Agaran teamed with Justin Medina for the No. 3 seed in the Boys Doubles, the duo meeting fellow Warriors Matthew Steinohrt and Kenji Masuda, who opened with a k6-0, 6-2 win over Island School’s Cole Moore and Bronson Griep.
Kaua‘i also took two seeds in the Girls Doubles division, its team of Jennifer Grady and Shay Orial getting the top seed and the team of Tarryn Orial, Shay’s sister, teaming with Noe Murray for the No. 3 seed.
Tarryn and Murray were scheduled to meet the winner of the Karalee Higa and Taylor Anama (KAP)/Alyssa Medd and Whitney Summerhays of Island School.
Rachel Umetsu and Annalissa Hartsell of Waimea High School earned the No. 2 seed and were scheduled to meet fellow Menehune Shantel Rita and Keycee San Agustin-Nordmeier following Rita and San Agustin-Nordmeier’s 6-0, 6-0 opening win over Kaua‘i’s Marieas Barsamira and D. Layaoen.
Kapa‘a’s Khae-Chawat Saowaiak and Kaylie Nakamura earned the No. 4 seed in the Girls Doubles, the pair scheduled to open against the Waimea pair of Caylee Yamamoto and Shaylyn Jim, who advanced following a 6-4, 6-3 win over Island School’s Madison Moore and Katy Davidson.
The Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA state tennis championships will be played at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park May 3 to 5.
