The state Office of Planning Coastal Zone Management is scheduling a series of “listening sessions” throughout Hawai‘i on the future management of ocean resources, with the first meeting scheduled next week on Kaua‘i.
An open house begins at 5:30 p.m., with a formal presentation to follow at 6:30 p.m. on April 25 at the Wilcox Elementary School cafeteria at 4319 Hardy St. in Lihu‘e.
Last updated in 2006, an evaluation of the first five years of the program’s Coastal Zone Management plan is under way. Up for discussion will be whether the program should be refined or changed to incorporate new issues for the next five years, states a news release issued Wednesday by the agency.
The program takes a “place-based approach to management of ocean resources in the islands, taking in account recognition of the ecological connections between land and sea, the link between human activities and impacts on the environment, and the need for improved collaboration and stewardship in natural resources governance,” states the news release.
The public also is invited to submit ideas via e-mail to ORMP_update@dbedt.hawaii.gov or to mail comments to: Office of Planning, Coastal Zone Management Program, P.O. Box 2359, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, 96804.
